Academy vs Accies Sports Festival A Roaring Success!

The annual sports festival returned this year and as anyone who attended will testify, it was most definitely a hit! Club President Andy Calder has been a real driving force in emphasising the importance, tradition and of course, fun, of this event and whether you came for the sport or just to sample that magnificent hog roast, it was a tremendous day out for all the family.

Kicking off the day was our cricket event and as always it was fantastic to see some former pupils return to represent Accies. A young Academy team opted to bat first which was a brave move and they were bowled out for 113 runs. Some excellent batting from Accies led to them winning by 8 wickets.

The Academy staff vs Accies cricket game was also one to remember! Six former TGA 1st XI Captains turned our for Accies (the opposing team were thrilled as you can imagine). There were superman dives to the batting crease, minor (but hilarious) tantrums, a Reverend keeping the peace and a chief anaesthetist bowling at what seemed to be around 80mph, Ian Furnish will attest! Accies took the win but all in all this particular game was a real hit with the watching crowd and the atmosphere around the ground was certainly buzzing at this point.

Moving on to hockey, Accies came flying out of the blocks, perhaps determined to get their name on the silverware and avenge last year’s defeat. Accies took the lead, however, the energy of the Academy team proved too much in the latter stages who scored twice to ensure victory for a second year running. Final score, 2-1.

Rugby, The Academy just nicked it but this session was more about team-building, the present meeting the future and some seriously good coaching from Scotland internationalist, Duncan Weir. Nonetheless, some great skills were on show and at times there was a clear desire for the game to be a little tougher than just touch! Final score 8-6 to The Academy.

Overall, it was a tremendous day. The sun came out, the sport (and food) was fantastic and it was quite simply just another great event that brings the school and Accies closer together. A huge thank you to Andy Calder and those who organised, to all who attended and our magnificent players. We look forward to seeing you all again next year.
