Accies’ End of Season Celebration Dinner

A crowd of 80 players and supporters gathered at New Anniesland on Friday 5th May to celebrate what has been a truly fantastic season, culminating of course, in one of the most memorable games of rugby in recent memory.

We were joined at the dinner by several familiar faces including the indomitable figure of James ‘Muff’ Scobie, President of West of Scotland FC, Donald Malone, the fiercely loyal and ever-present, Ian Williamson from sponsors Ivy Property, and Bob Johnstone from another supportive sponsor, Keltbray. We were also joined by a visitor who had travelled all the way from New Zealand, our very good friend, Graeme Mitchell. All very much added to the enjoyment of the evening.

The evening was hosted by John Beattie who entertained us with some great stories, following which we sat back and enjoyed a beautiful meal all washed down with a little help from another sponsor, Loch Lomond Whisky.

Throughout dinner the room was filled as always with tales of treasured memories and before long it was time for the main event. Our awards this year were organised (and presented) by two people who have worked so tirelessly to develop a squad (and a group of firm friends) who do their absolute best for one another, so a huge thank you to Ryan Grant and Ruaridh Jackson. Special mention also to Duncan Weir and Ryan Wilson, both equally appreciated.

Awards included ‘most improved player’, ‘dick of the season’, ‘player of the season’ and ‘players’ player of the year’. Recipients were all worthy winners, across both teams. Ross Cowan, not unexpectedly, received two awards having been a key contributor to the season’s successes.

The biggest cheer of the night was reserved for the very worthy winner of the prestigious ‘Clubman of the Year Award’ which went to our Club Captain and the man behind so much of our success – Kane Greggain.

In spite of individual accolades, however, emphasis on the overall squad effort this season was prevalent throughout the evening. Overall, this was a night of real celebration with supporters particularly enjoying the ‘Dirty Boot Award!’ The evening was rounded off with a brilliant speech from the very entertaining and ‘rugby mad’ West of Scotland legend – Alan Sneddon.

This was an outstanding evening of rugby reminisces and a reminder of the special camaraderie that exists within the club. With hard work, both on and off the pitch, it’s been a wonderful season. Our gratitude to the players and coaches, Chairman, Niall Campbell and his committee, and the wider support of our President, Andy Calder.

Harder seasons lie ahead, but we most certainly look forward to them.

Donald Reid – Club Secretary
