This week, The Glasgow Academical Club was delighted to usher in a new era of reunion with its inaugural Golden Lunch (formerly the Iain Muir/GASBAGS lunch).
Representatives from the Club and The Glasgow Academy worked together to reimagine the format of some of its reunion events that have been run annually for over 60 years, to create a new annual lunch bringing together our “Golden” former pupils who left the Academy in 1973 or before.
Former pupils Gordon Wilson 1964 and John Byers 1963 were instrumental in developing the new format.
The lunch, which took place at New Anniesland on Tuesday 5 March, was a celebration of the enduring community of the Academical Club and celebrated not only their own connections, but their long-standing support and involvement with the school.
With over 45 guests in attendance, the group heard from Deputy Rector Sandy Mathewson on the strong position of the School along with Head of Development Catherine Mulgrew who introduced a new initiative-The Golden Bursary Fund. The Fund will support a talented pupil with a passion for sport and the potential to achieve great things, ensuring that financial barriers never stand in the way of ability or ambition.
There was much good humour, reminiscences and camaraderie on the day, and we are already looking forward to next year and the continued legacy of this important gathering.
